Getting Hurt by Others
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a grappling martial art and sport in which the goal is to control and submit your opponent. During training, you only progress in skill and competency by grappling with a resisting opponent. Much can happen during a rolling session, including getting physically hurt or injured by your training partner. Injuries can sideline you for weeks or months, providing time for resentment you have for your training partner to bubble up.
Similarly in life, our friends, family, or coworkers can hurt us emotionally. We have a choice to forgive them and tolerate our emotions or we can resent them. It feels easier to give in to the resentment, but we may build our character by accepting what happened and treat it as a learning opportunity.
We can learn to confront others, have difficult conversations, and implement solutions to ensure future harm is less likely. We all will be hurt in some way but our response determines how quickly we will recover.
