Are Careers the Most Important Thing in Life?

Family first. God first. Ourselves first. There are a handful of things that we consider as the most important things in life. For some it's family, for others it's God, and some believe we need to care for ourselves before we can care for others. Should we consider family, God, or ourselves as the most important thing in life? What about the one thing that actually allows us to be a contributing member of society? The thing that allows us to support and provide for our family? The thing that allows us to support our churches, mosques, and temples?

What about our careers?

Do people really consider their careers as the most important thing in life? And should we? Of course, we know we need to make a living and put food on the table. Careers feel like a necessary part of life, but do we treat it as number one or is it simply one thing we have to do?

Our careers facilitate the rest of our lives. It determines the type of life we provide to our families, the city we live in, the hobbies we pursue, the things we buy, and so much more. So why isn't it at the top of the list?

Without a career and an income, how would you keep your family alive? How would they eat? What shelter would they have? If family is important to you, your career actually comes first. The same can be said for other important aspects of life.

What would change if you made your career the most important thing in your life? Could you build more job security? Would you be more strategic in the decisions you make at work? Would you find fulfillment in knowing that the work you're doing is literally enabling everything else in your life?

If your career was the most important thing to you, would you be better?
